"It's not only that our demand-side, efficiency-based solutions cost a lot less; they're also much faster. They are short-lead-time, fast-payback, so you enormously increase the velocity of the capital loop and therefore can do a lot more with less working capital. In the past dozen years, this country got four and one-half times as much new energy from savings as from net increases in supply. A third of the new supply was renewables. And all of the zillions of little things that all of you did with caulk guns and duct tape and so on since 1973 are now giving the country two-fifths more energy each year than the entire oil industry."
- Amory Lovins

Video Description:

Conversation for a Sustainable Society brings humor and joviality to energy efficiency and economic renewal by bringing together some excellent speakers who contribute to a one day panel discussion convened in Aspen, CO, to celebrate Rocky Mountain Institute’s 10th anniversary in 1992. Hunter Lovins, (co-founder of RMI, an independent, non-partisan, non-profit resource policy center), probes the panelists for answers to some of the big questions concerning energy use today and she gets a remarkable shopping list of solutions and suggestions. Among others: utility reform, resource efficient technologies, lighting/heating/cooling retrofits in commercial leasing markets, and system analysis by students of their college resource flows - all doable end/use-least/cost answers to some of the globe’s most intractable problems.

Producers Notes:
Conversation for a Sustainable Society (1993) features Amory and Hunter Lovins who have led the global campaign to value resource productivity. They promote market-based reforms that promote better choices and greater profits through simple, relatively quick pay-back investments in energy efficiency. The ‘conversations’ in this tape steer us toward better motors, lights, and HVAC systems; smarter building retrofits and leases that ultimately save money and increase productivity; and regulatory/accounting innovations that promote sustainability through markets, profits, enterprise, and opportunity. Although this is a very straightforward tape, with little embellishment, our customers love the attitude. Amory and Hunter have an attitude. They know that these ideas can and will change the world. The job now is to get everyone in on the promise.
